MY LANDLORD RAISED MY RENT BECAUSE I GOT A PROMOTIO

I’m a single mom of three kids — ages 4, 7, and 11 — and I work full-time in logistics. We live in a modest two-bedroom rental. My kids share one room, and I sleep on a pull-out couch in the living room. It’s not luxurious, but it’s close to school and work, and it’s safe. That was enough for me.

Our landlord, Frank, has always walked around like he invented real estate. He ignores messages, delays repairs, and once told me, “You should be grateful you’ve got a place at all with all those kids.” But despite his attitude, I stayed. The rent kept creeping up over the years, but it was still within reach — until things changed.

After eight long years of dedication — never using a sick day, always staying late — I was promoted to Operations Manager. The raise wasn’t massive, but it was life-changing for us. I could finally afford small joys for my kids — name-brand cereal, new sneakers that actually fit, and saying “yes” to field trips without checking the bank balance five times.

Proud of myself, I shared a short update on LinkedIn:
“Proud to say I’ve been promoted to Operations Manager. Hard work pays off.”

Two days later, I got an email from Frank.

Subject: Rental Adjustment Notice
Message:
“Saw your little promotion post — congrats! Figured now’s the perfect time to squeeze a bit more out of you. New rent: +$500/month.”

No improvements, no notice, just pure greed.

I called him immediately. “Why now?”

His response?
“You wanted a career and a bunch of kids — that comes with bills. You’re not broke anymore, so don’t expect charity. This is business, not a daycare.”

I was furious. But instead of screaming or threatening legal action, I took a breath and got clever. I knew two key things about Frank:

He’s lazy.
He hasn’t updated his property listing info since 2011.
So I got to work.

I contacted the local Building and Safety Department and submitted a formal report about multiple code violations:

The leaky kitchen ceiling he never fixed
The mold in the bathroom wall he kept painting over
The broken smoke detectors he shrugged off
I followed up with Housing Services and gave them everything — texts, emails, even a video of my 7-year-old using a bucket to catch ceiling drips.

Then I contacted a tenants’ rights group who helped me organize a full inspection of the building. Turns out, Frank had five other violations in the same complex, including illegal rent increases.

Fast forward two months:

Frank was fined over $12,000
He was forced to roll back all illegal rent hikes
He had 60 days to complete all repairs or face eviction of his own tenants — by the city
And guess what?
He came crawling back to me, offering to keep my rent at the old price “for the inconvenience.”

I politely declined. I’d already found a better apartment through the tenant advocacy group — closer to work, same price, three bedrooms, and managed by someone who actually picks up the phone.

Lesson?
If you mess with a working mom who’s used to juggling everything life throws her way — be prepared to lose at your own game.
