It all started just a few minutes earlier. The baby girl, only one day old, was sleeping peacefully in her little crib. The mother was resting in her room, wrapped in a blanket after a difficult delivery, while the father was talking to a nurse near the exit, discussing some documents. The hallway was quiet — the only sound was the steady breathing of the newborns.
The boy quietly entered the room, looked around to make sure no one was watching, and approached his sister’s crib. Carefully, he lifted her into his arms, supporting her head the way his mother had taught him, and quickly headed toward the door. He moved with surprising confidence — far too much for a six-year-old.
“Hey, boy! What are you doing?” the nurse shouted when she saw his silhouette in the doorway.
But the boy didn’t even turn around. He ran down the hallway, holding his sister tightly to his chest. The nurse rushed after him, called security, and the father sprinted behind them. A full-blown alarm filled the corridor.
“Quick, stop him! He has a newborn!”
“The baby is in danger!” the staff yelled as they ran outside.
The boy ran through the snow as fast as he could, almost slipping in his winter shoes, while the baby girl continued sleeping peacefully in her pink blanket, not moving at all. Only a few minutes had passed before they finally managed to catch the little “kidnapper,” but in that short time the father was nearly fainting from fear, and the poor mother had no idea where her two children had gone.
When the nurse finally caught up to the boy and gently took the baby from his arms, he clung desperately to the blanket.
“Please don’t take her! Please!” he cried. “I don’t want my little sister to be sent to an orphanage! Dad, please don’t let them take her!”
The father froze, not understanding what he was talking about. It took several minutes before everything became clear. The boy had accidentally overheard two nurses talking about another mother — a woman who had decided to give up her baby.
That newborn really was going to be sent to an orphanage, but it had nothing to do with their family.
The adults explained to the boy that he had misunderstood everything, that his sister wasn’t going anywhere, and that tomorrow they would all go home together.
He studied the adults’ faces for a long moment, as if checking whether they were telling the truth. Only then did he loosen his grip and allow the nurse to take the baby back to the warm room.
And the baby girl continued sleeping just as peacefully, unaware that in the first 24 hours of her life someone had already tried to “rescue” her from an imaginary danger.
